Cat Walking Locations, #5

Location

Monterey Tides Hotel

2600 Sand Dunes Drive

Monterey, CA 93940

Okay, this "walking" location is a little different than the others; a hotel on the ocean. From the outside, the hotel looks more like a barracks than a place you'd want to spend your downtime, but don't let that deter you.

It's cat friendly.

So we took Gloria there over a year ago. The night before we left for the hotel, the cats got out. Puma brought a squirrel home he'd killed. Gloria didn't return and I had to walk through the neighborhood calling her name. She was petrified and hiding beneath a bush on a neighbor's overgrown property. When I got her home, I noticed a cut over her right eye, so off we were to the vet. The vet said the eye wasn't scratched, so she gave us an antibacterial salve to apply. Since we were going out of town, we decided to take her with us so that we could apply the salve.

And we did.

She was in the pre-training stage, so she didn't have as very much experience walking on leash, but she certainly had some. The hotel has an amazing bar with floor to ceiling windows that look out on the ocean which is only about 20 feet away. I held her in my lap and she was content to sit and look out the window with me.

She got a lot of attention from other bar goers (including one couple who went back and got their puppy from their room to show us). We stayed probably two hours total, and every once in a while I'd walk her around the bar for exercise. She did pretty well and had a decent time.

Then I took her out on the beach. It was less successful; the roar of the waves and the lack of places to hide made her nervous, but still, she didn't do too bad and I'm sure if she got regular trips, she'd become accustomed to it over time and enjoy the warm sand.

It was a relaxing couple days. I give this one an 8 out of 10.
